The Funding Principle
I want to be completely direct about money, because commercial compromise is the fastest way to corrupt an intellectual mission.
I am not pursuing wealth through GQuixote. Monetization exists purely because maintaining servers, acquiring research literature, licensing typefaces, and dedicating analysis hours incurs real financial costs. The sole objective of our revenue model is to remove enough financial friction that this work can be pursued with rigorous independence.
I do not want to extract more revenue than is necessary to sustain the brand while I am actively involved. As I am the brand at present, this is our foundational ethical ceiling.
The Three Phases of Sustainability
Our progression toward financial sustainability follows three explicit phases:
Cost Offset & Infrastructure Maintenance
The immediate goal is modest: cover hosting, development tools, and archival databases. Current revenue mechanisms include:
- Optional Patronage: Voluntary contributions via Ko-Fi and PayPal. If a design on XYZ or an essay on LIFE provided valuable perspective, you can contribute to fund the next inquiry. Downloads and reading always stay 100% free.
- Print-on-Demand Fulfillment: Direct physical orders via Printful, Redbubble, and TeePublic with prices capped at our strict 10% ceiling rule.
- Ethical, Non-Invasive Advertising (Temporary): Minimal, non-tracking ads (such as EthicalAds or privacy-respecting native units) deployed temporarily to offset early hosting costs. We will phase these out as direct patronage grows to avoid any advertiser influence.
Self-Sustaining Creative Capacity
When the audience and readership justify it, transition GQuixote into a fully self-funding venture covering both research expenses and basic living allowances. This unlocks full-time dedication to writing, archival digging, and design production.
- Expanded Marketplace Distribution: Syncing to Etsy and independent cultural storefronts.
- Neurodivergent Pride Collection: Purpose-driven paid apparel supporting neurodiversity initiatives.
Community Stewardship
Opening the financial structure to community governance. Pricing decisions, surplus reinvestment, and research grants will be directed transparently with our most engaged participants. The mission permanently outlives the individual founder.
The 10% Margin Ceiling
For any manufactured apparel sold under GQuixote, I enforce a strict rule: I take no more than 10% above the direct cost of printing and base garment manufacturing.
If a printer charges £12 to produce a DTG shirt, the price to the buyer is capped at £13.20. If bulk production later lowers that base cost to £8, the price drops to £8.80. The 10% ceiling remains fixed. We will never exploit our wearers, because anyone wearing a GQuixote garment is already performing the service of carrying a vital message into the world.
